When President Obama signed the Credit Card Act into law in May 2009, card companies like American Express had to change many practices related to rate increases and customer notification. Most notably, the new law eliminated the “fine print” communications of customer contracts.
To comply with these requirements, American Express undertook a fundamental overhaul of its Cardmember Agreement to ensure it could be easily understood by its 92 million account holders. To accomplish this, the firm engaged The Haykel Group to work in close consultation with company lawyers. With them, our team rewrote dozens of pages of legal copy into plain English and designed the final contract into a visually accessible, informative document.
